It’s popular, it’s fun, and it has improved the wellbeing of older adults of all abilities—many participants say it has changed their life.
It’s On Lok Always Active, the exercise and fall prevention program with over 900 participants and more than 40 classes in English, Spanish, and Chinese. People love On Lok Always Active and it keeps on growing, marking its 17th anniversary this year.
In September, On Lok Always Active held a milestone event underwritten by a generous donor that brought together all 12 sites offering the program. Seniors from community centers across San Francisco came together to celebrate the pursuit of better health in the company of peers. Their energy was electrifying.
“On Lok Always Active has been a great source for keeping me strong, flexible and in balance. And I have enjoyed getting to know all the wonderful people and teachers,” said Betty, who has been attending classes at On Lok 30th Street Senior Center for several years.
On Lok Always Active sessions focus on mobility, muscle strengthening, balance, and flexibility to increase energy and help reduce or prevent chronic conditions such as heart disease, high blood pressure, and diabetes.
“The falls prevention curriculum helps seniors learn more about their bodies, and feeling stronger and empowered,” said instructor Susan Sullivan. “One of the success stories I often hear from my students is how they just went up the stairs of their building with a grocery bag in each hand and didn’t need to use the banister.”
For many participants, feeling better in their body is just one of the benefits of On Lok Always Active. “I would say it has changed my life,” said David. “The big thing for me is the positive spirit that people have. When I come here, it is the happiest part of my week.”
