The On Lok Senior Center is at the heart of the community.

About On Lok 30th Street Senior Center

On Lok 30th Street Senior Center began in 1979, when a small group of seniors asked for a room in the 225 30th Street building, just south of the Mission District neighborhood in San Francisco, to start a social club.

Today, our senior community center connects 6,700 older adults with each other and to programs for health and well-being:

All services are available in English and Spanish. On Lok Always Active is available in English, Spanish, and Cantonese.

Discover our enchanting garden

Relax in the shade of redwood trees, grow vegetables for our very own Farmer’s market, and enjoy outdoor activities such as Tai Chi in the center’s lush and peaceful garden.

For decades, the center’s garden has been one of the hidden joys of the center. Seniors worked with staff to landscape its grounds and they even built the fountain at its center. The focal point of the garden is an 850-square-foot mural created by senior in collaboration with Precita Eyes artists, a community-based group who has painted many of San Francisco’s iconic murals.

Precita Eyes founder Susan Cervantes and artist Miranda Bergman worked with the center's community on a design that reflected its rich and vibrant history, and the pride and sense of belonging seniors have for this place. Then the muralists took their sketch to the garden and traced an outline of the image on the wall, scaled to size.

Precita Eyes led a Community Painting Day, inviting seniors, volunteers and staff to start filling in the different parts of the mural, as if on a giant paint-by-number canvas.  After the event, Precita Eyes artists spent a month completing the mural, before it was officially unveiled in 2019 to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the senior center.

Welcome to our community!

Doug Martin came to the center 10 years ago for the hot meals but found his passion in the computer lab, where he now volunteers. Meet Doug and other seniors who consider the center their “second home.”
