Growing up in Mexico, Ana Boj never had the opportunity to pursue an education. So when she was graduated from the Aging Mastery Program® (AMP), in November, Ana felt, for the first time in her life, pride in her accomplishment.

AMP is a 10-week virtual course created by the National Council on Aging and presented by On Lok to teach adults aged 55+ real skills for making the most of their longevity.

“There is nothing like AMP,” says Ana, who completed the Spanish version of the course. “I love this program because it covers so many areas, from healthy eating to healthy relationships. The financial fitness part of the program really resonated with me. It taught me how to set money aside for the things I need to do and want to do for the rest of my life. I was happy to participate because I want to be the best I can be.”

Since its launch nearly three years ago, AMP has graduated 287 seniors. The program is offered in English and Spanish, with a Chinese version in the works for 2024.

Eighty-three-year-old Zoila Martinez attended AMP with her daughter Gladys, who is also her caregiver. “I wanted to know how to manage my health so I can maintain as much of my independence as possible. I really loved to learn how to breathe to improve relaxation and control my stress levels,” she says.

Gladys says AMP helped her deal with the challenges of caregiving: “Now that our roles have reversed, and I take care of my mom, I wanted to better understand how to deal with changes she is going through, while preparing for my own aging.”

The next AMP workshop starts January 16. To learn more, please register for one of our upcoming virtual information sessions that take place on Wednesdays from 3-4 p.m.
